Currently, the top concern of parents is orthodontic treatment for children. For kids, having misaligned or crowded teeth can make them self-conscious when communicating with others. So, when is the appropriate time to get braces for children?
1. When do your children need braces?
According to The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), your children need to have their first check-ups with an orthodontist not later than the age of 7 or when they have signs of malocclusion such as: crowding teeth, spacing teeth, crooked teeth,…
Children between the ages of 6 to 12 have nearly fully developed teeth and jaws. This is the ideal time for orthodontic treatment as it becomes easier and more effective to correct their teeth. However, it is still essential to take the child for regular check-up and early consultation with an orthodontist to assess and monitor the development of their jaws, helps to detect any abnormalities in the jaw structure early.

3. Different types of braces for kids
Orthodontic treatment for children between the ages of 6 to 12 will be divided into these following two phases:
Growth guidance appliance: Orthodontic appliances for growth modification in children aged 6 to 12 are used to intervene in correcting the jaw bone alignment. These appliances help adjust the misdirection of the jaw bones to their correct positions, creating a well-rounded and even dental arch.
After the phase of using growth modification appliances to stabilize the jaw bones, the child will progress to the detailed correction of the bite using fixed braces or clear aligners like Invisalign. However, the decision of choosing between wearing braces or Invisalign clear aligners will depend on the recommendation of the orthodontist.
- Braces: Braces are fixed onto the teeth and can use either metal or ceramic braces. Braces with colorful elastic bands help children adapt to them more quickly and make the experience of wearing braces more enjoyable. The treatment duration usually lasts from 1 to 2 years, depending on the severity of the dental misalignment in the child. There are 5 special orthodontic appliances: Functional appliances EF, Headgear for jaw correction, Facemask for jaw protraction, Quad-Helix for widening the jaw arch, and Tongue crib for correcting open bite.
- Transparent aligners Invisalign: This is the latest digital orthodontic method in the dental industry. In this approach, the orthodontist will provide the child with Invisalign clear aligners (a type of tray made from smart plastic material with the ability to move teeth according to the dentist’s Invisalign treatment plan). These clear aligners are precisely designed based on the child’s jaw impression and teeth size, ensuring high aesthetics. Moreover, they can be easily removed when eating, drinking, or cleaning the teeth, and they do not cause any discomfort for the child.
