Have you lost a single tooth? If so, you may be looking for the ideal restorative dentistry procedure to replace the missing tooth. Titanium implants are the most common long-term solution available, with excellent results. It has been proven that a dental implant can restore more than 95% of the function and look of the tooth.
1. Effect of Tooth Loss
Tooth loss can have a detrimental effect on the quality of one’s life. In the beginning, you might not see the need to seek professional help since your mouth’s functions, such as chewing, breathing, and your smile may stay the same. However, gradually, this problem can lead to further dental complications and negatively affect your self-esteem.
The first problem that can, and going to happen, is the changing of your teeth’ position on the dental arch. The dental arch is the curved structure that houses your teeth that helps ensure a proper bite. However, with one tooth going missing, the positions of the other teeth start to shift. The neighbor teeth can drift or move to compensate for the missing tooth. The movement slowly creates plaque traps between teeth, leading to possible bad breath, cavities, and gum disease. Even worse, it can obstruct your future treatment if you decide to fix and restore the missing tooth. With the moving of the other teeth that have already occurred, it may take a longer time to rearrange the teeth. You may even need a brace or orthodontic treatment to reform that space again.
The next problem caused by tooth loss is jaw bone deterioration and loss. Within one year after tooth loss, the jaw bone portion of that missing tooth can deteriorate up to 25%, and for the next 3 years, the loss can gradually go up to 45 – 60%. The more jaw bone deteriorates, the more complex it is to recover with implant treatment in the future. The reason is that if implant treatment is performed, the neighbor teeth and the jaw bone need to be strong and healthy to hold the implant post in place. Therefore, once the jaw bone deteriorates, it requires more procedures to increase bone density and ultimately causes more time, effort, and more expensive.
2. Advantages of Tooth Implant
An implant is considered the safest and fastest solution to restore tooth loss. A few advantages of implants include:
Restore more than 95% of the function and look of the missing tooth. You can rest assured to eat comfortably and maintain your confidence.
Prevent jaw bone loss. Your jawbone needs the stimulation it gets when your teeth connect to maintain its mass. Dental implants are the only tooth replacement option that can replace jaw bone stimulation, helping to prevent bone loss.
Prevent overcrowded, crooked teeth and ensure an aesthetic smile.
Maximize the preservation of neighbor teeth. Previously, a porcelain bridge was the solution to replace a missing tooth. With this procedure, a dentist would anchor the false tooth to the natural teeth on either side of the missing area. However, this procedure can damage the natural teeth and weaken them over time. A dental implant, on the other hand, is only integrated into the missing area; therefore, it will not harm and negatively affect the surrounding teeth.
3. Single Tooth Implant Procedure
When you decide to replace a missing tooth through a tooth implant at Elite Dental, the throughout procedure follows:
Initial consultation: Your dentist will examine your teeth and gums to determine if your jawbone is well-conditioned to receive the single tooth implant. Through X-ray and CBCT scanning, your dentist will explain and advise you regarding time, treatment plan, and what to expect for your dental implant.
Get a blood test: Blood tests help determine your actual condition before the dental surgery. Our medical staff will draw on your blood to ensure you are suitable for the dental implant procedure.
Dental implant placement: During the procedure, anesthesia or sedation will be given to ensure you are relaxed and comfortable. Your dentist will drill a hole into your jawbone to attach a titanium post, which will serve as the tooth’s root. Typically, dental implant placement is a very gentle procedure. Without bone grafting, it can be accomplished within 15 minutes.
Follow-up appointment: After 7-10 days, you will be required to see your dentist again for a re-examination and check-up on your jawbone. The dental crown won’t be attached for another 6-12 weeks, which is the amount of time necessary for your jawbone to heal and grow around the titanium post.
Dental crown placement: Once the jawbone heals and secures the titanium post, your dentist will finally attach the dental crown over the post. The process of placing the dental crown is often performed in 2-3 visits within 5-7 days.
