1. Fixed braces
Fixed braces usually consist of square brackets that are cemented to each tooth. They also have a wire running through them to join the brackets together. Below are different types of fixed braces available at Elite Dental.
Metal braces
This type of brace is made of high-grade stainless steel brackets and a flexible metal archwire that guides the teeth to the correct position. They are the strongest form of braces and are prone to less damage. They are also the least expensive form of braces available. However, metal braces are not aesthetically pleasing. They are often very noticeable. They may cause irritation and can stuck on lips and cheeks causing bleeding.
Ceramic braces
This is a type of brace also known as clear braces. They are similar to metal braces, but they use transparent or tooth-colored brackets instead of stainless steel brackets. Tooth-colored or clear brackets are attached to the teeth with the help of similarly colored or transparent wires and rubber bands. One huge advantage of ceramic braces is that they are more comfortable than metal braces. However, one drawback of ceramic braces is that they are easily chipped and stained so patients need to be careful while wearing this type of braces.
Self-ligating braces
They are one of the most popular types of braces in recent years. They are quite similar to metal braces and ceramic braces. They consist of a bracket and wire system. However, they do not use rubber bands. Instead, they make use of a sliding bracket mechanism with “doors” or “clips” that attach to the wire. This sliding mechanism ensures minimum friction and is less painful than metal or ceramic braces. Self-ligating braces can reduce the treatment time compared to metal or ceramic braces.
