Wisdom teething often causes pain and discomfort in many people. In some cases, patients also have difficulty chewing, affecting their health and living life. When wisdom teeth erupt, how to limit and overcome pain? Please find out more details through the article below.
1. What is wisdom teething?
Wisdom teeth are teeth number 8, located in the innermost 4 corners of the jaw and often grow behind other teeth. Although wisdom teeth germs appear early (which can be seen through X-ray film), the signs when wisdom teeth erupt usually take place when we reach adulthood, so we are called wisdom teeth.
Wisdom teeth do not erupt in one go, but divide into small stages. The intervals between wisdom teething stages can be 1-2 months apart or longer.
Normally, if it grows in the right direction, wisdom teeth will finish by the age of 21 – this is also the time when permanent teeth are completed. However, it should be noted that the timing of wisdom teething for each person will be different, and not everyone will have wisdom teeth.

2. Common manifestations of wisdom teeth
Because it is located in the bottom corner of the jaw, it grows last, so when it appears, wisdom teeth can cause the following conditions:
Red or swollen gums
When wisdom teeth grow, it will cause the gums to redden. This manifestation is usually more noticeable with teething in the same lower jaw than with the upper jaw. In addition, when you touch lightly with your tongue, you can also feel that the gums are hard and swollen.
Gum pain
Many people wonder “Does wisdom teeth hurt?”, the answer is “Yes”. This is a completely normal phenomenon because when protruding, wisdom teeth will cause the tissues of the gums to be irritated. However, the degree of wisdom toothache in each case will be different: some people have only mild pain, but there is also extremely soreness and cannot chew normally.

The breath has an unpleasant odor and a bitter taste appears in the mouth
When the gums are separated so that wisdom teeth come out, the foods you eat every day can get stuck and cause an unpleasant odor. Therefore, do not forget about clean oral hygiene during wisdom teething.
Fever
Most wisdom teeth people have a fever, ranging from 37 to 38 degrees Celsius. This condition usually ends when wisdom teeth are fully erect, in place. Conversely, if wisdom teeth grow misaligned, causing complications, then the fever will last.
3. What should I do when teething with wisdom teeth?
During wisdom teething, you should:
- Thorough oral care (oral hygiene at least 2 times / day) to limit diseases such as caries, gingivitis, periodontitis.
- Apply cold compresses to relieve pain during wisdom teething. Specifically, you use a cold pack or put 2-3 small ice cubes in a soft towel, then place on the cheek area near the wisdom teething site, let it sit for 2-5 minutes.
- Abstain from hard, tough foods. Instead, choose foods that are soft, easy to chew and full of nutrients.
- In particular, you should go to the doctor to be checked as soon as possible. Cases of oblique/misaligned/horizontal or underground teeth can be detected through X-ray film.
4. Should wisdom teeth be extracted?
Not all wisdom teething needs to be removed. Usually, only cases of underground, misaligned wisdom teeth need to be removed. In addition, in some cases, the doctor will also prescribe tooth extraction to treat the pain and prevent consequences if the condition persists. It is best when there are signs of pain, you should immediately go to the dental center for examination, film and advice on wisdom teeth treatment solutions with the doctor.
